Reasons And Possible Solutions To Directv Cannot Detect SWM

Before we jump straight into the issue, let’s take a look at what an SWM is and how it helps your home’s dish connection.

What Is SWM, And What Does It Do?

If you had more than one TV back in the early days of satellite dish connections, you had to pay for multiple subscriptions. The SWM proved to be a game-changer since its introduction.

The role of SWM is simple, but it’s revolutionary. The splitter that is connected to the SWM splits a single connection into multiple segments. As a result, you can watch multiple devices via one satellite connection.

There are two popular types of SWM available on the market, but depending on the DVR type, you need to have a compatible SWM. An SWM8 that comes with 8 units supports 4 DVRs. As each DVR has 2 tuners, the 8-connection SWM8 will support 8 tuners. There are also 5, 16, and 32 connection SWMs available.

In order to find a potential fix for the DirecTV connection issue, it is crucial to understand the SWM. Let’s see all the possible causes and what you can do to fix them.

Check The Coax Cable Thoroughly

The coaxial cable damage could potentially cause the SWM detection problem. Here’s what you can do to solve this:

Check the entire cable thoroughly.

Check the connection between SWM and DVR.

If you see any defects or physical damage, call your service provider. Sometimes, only the replacement of the cable can solve the issue.

Check The Connection Ports

DirecTV requires a lot of ports and wires to set up. Any misconduct would result in an obstacle to the successful connection.

Verify the power inserter’s connection to ensure that it is properly connected. There are usually two input connections in the inserter:

Power to SWMSignal to IRD

The power to the SWM cable goes directly to the dish. On the other hand, the signal to IRD  connects with the receiver. If you still find it hard, we’d suggest you contact your service provider.

Check The SWM and DVR Compatibility

As mentioned above, the SWM is available in different variants. It has to be compatible with the DVR device. One DVR has 2 tuners in it, so for 4 DVRs, there are a total of 8 tuners.

The 8 units would work perfectly for 4 DVRs.

But if you have more than 4, you need a 16-unit SWM then.

Because of setting up the wrong device, your DirecTV would not be unable to detect the SWM. Therefore, for a connection to be successful, a compatible device is a must.

Reset The Swm And Receiver Device

Resetting the SWM or receiver could resolve the issue by removing bugs from the device’s firmware.

To reset the SWM device:

Unplug the SWM power cable. Wait for 30 seconds. Plug the power cable back in. Check the DirecTV

To Reset the Receiver

Select MENU from the DirecTV remoteSelect Reset from Settings and press it.

Or you can do it manually by

Press the red reset button on the receiver. Wait until the resetting process ends.

Still Not Fixed?

So, we have already shown you a number of possible solutions. If it’s still not fixed, this may need a complete device replacement. There may be a problem with the receiver or the SWM device. But before exchanging the device, make sure to inform the provider’s support team.

How Would You Know If You Have Swm Directv?

It’s crucial to know whether you have an SWM or not in order to make any device replacements on your DirecTV setup. However, it’s quite easy to find.

There are a number of ways to do that:

Look for the SWM device manually, and if you find a device with 8 or 16 black channels/switches on it, then you are using an SWM. And also, you can look for the splitter: a small device with a green level and multiple black keys.

Check out the satellite dish cable. If you have multiple receivers in your home, but there’s only one line coming out of the dish, you are definitely using SWM technology.

The reasons behind DirectTV cannot detect SWM could involve a minor buggy cause, or it could be physical harm to the hardware. The potential solution could be resetting the device, or it could require a complete part replacement. Here in this article, we’ve discussed all possible reasons and solutions to that problem.

Where is the SWM located?

In most installations, the SWM is located in the LNB, which is a small box on one arm of the satellite dish.

What does 776 mean on DirecTV?

The error 776 means that your satellite dish is unable to establish a connection with the DirecTV components.

Will DIRECTV work without SWM?

Yes. Older boxes like DirecTV HR24DVR or H2R can work without an SWM.
