The fact that Ban from The Seven Deadly Sins is proclaimed to be The Sin of Greed. The dude just doesn’t fit that description at all! He has never seemed obsessed with power, he never tried to take immortality for himself, and he doesn’t seem to care about money at all. In this list I’ve compiled some anime characters that are far more suited for that greedy title.

10. Gramps

Anime: To Your Eternity I want to start off with this one, as it’s really short and sweet. Okay, maybe not that sweet. Gramps initially seemed really chill. He saved Gugu and even gave him a roof over his head in exchange for Gugu doing some chores around the house. Okay, I say “some chores” but in reality the old man made him do absolutely everything. But that wasn’t the thing that tipped me off to his greediness. Rather, it was the fact that Gramps just pumped Gugu’s stomach with alcohol to use him as a distiller. He never asked nor mentioned this to Gugu, mind you. He just kind of did it. Because what do a boy’s feelings really mean when compared to some unique alcohol?

9. Rachel

Anime: Tower of God Rachel is pretty much a devil and would sell out her own grandmother if it meant achieving her goal. She is so obsessed about getting to the top of the Tower that she left all human decency at the door, and manipulated herself up. The ending of season 1 had her greediness on full display, as she pushed Bam of a cliff just so that she could satisfy her own greedy needs. Bonus jerk points for doing this to Bam of all people. The dude who literally saved your behind countless times and showed you nothing but compassion.

8. Honest

Anime: Akame ga Kill Most king-type villains are greedy as hell. But since I didn’t want to fill the entire list up with those oversized crown-wearers, I chose Honest as their representative. He has all those qualities you love to hate, and never love. He manipulates a young child and then acts like a benevolent and competent leader. He constantly surrounds himself with women who don’t have much of a choice when it comes to being in his presence. And, of course, anyone who slightly opposes him is immediately sent to the chopping block. Can’t have all those pesky thinkers, now can we?

7. Ishihara

Anime: Rainbow If corruption had a poster-boy, it would be this sorry excuse for a man. His morality is so far gone that even hardened criminals look at him with disgust, and don’t even want to dirty their hands by staining them with his blood. He sells poor inmates to his equally disgusting acquaintance for some cash on the side – and is even prepared to stab his own colleagues if it means protecting his business. He shows no sympathy when his victim ends up taking their own life, and tends to physically abuse all those who dare to shine a smile in his presence. Truly a walking piece of garbage.

6. Eva Heinemann

Anime: Monster You’ll seldom find a character that’s as far up their own behind as Eva. She has the nerve to proudly state how certain lives, namely the lives of rich people, are flat out more important than others. And whenever a man catches her eye, she pretends like the entire universe must bend in a way where she can have him all to herself. She literally burned down her own house just because her gardener dared to see his ex-wife. And don’t even get me started on her relationship with Tenma. Eva just believes that the world and everyone in it owe her something for merely existing.

5. Laurent Thierry

Anime: The Great Pretender You have to be extremely greedy if you want to make it in the heist business. It doesn’t matter how much money you made, because there’s always that next big heist that will make you even more money. I feel like Laurent has been in this loop for so long that it has just become counterproductive. He’ll spend so much money on a heist that he won’t even end up with a profit. And yet he keeps doing it, always thinking about that next big deal and the millions that’ll be in his pocket. It honestly just feels like a curse more than anything.

4. Freya

Anime: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Freya is the type of character that just has to have it all. She’s the biggest puppeteer I’ve seen in a really long time. And no story narrative is completely void of her influence. She must always get her way. So, if she points at a dude and says that she wants him, then months of planning, manipulating, and fighting will take place in order for her to “get” him. I feel like this will be more evident with the upcoming seasons – but even now she’s pretty ridiculous.

3. Nami

Anime: One Piece Nami is the most pirate-y of all the Straw-hats. She just wants to make that bread and swim around in some gold like her name was Scrooge McDuck. I mean, it makes sense, given that she grew up rather poor. In fact, it could even be useful for the crew since she’ll stop them from immediately wasting all of it. But that doesn’t help the fact that her entire face lights up whenever money is at hand. I will say though, that she’s the most likable character on this list. So her greediness is more endearing that off-putting.

2. Shigekiyo Yangu

Anime: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable This dude honestly feels like two separate people. Most of the time he’ll be pretty chill. He’ll goof around and be clueless as to what’s happening. However, the second he realizes that there’s money to be made, he becomes the most irritating living representation of capitalism there is. Even if it was a team effort, he’ll always look for a way to get the biggest share – going so far as to even fight his friends in order to get his filthy profit. Even his Stand reflects this, as it’s only really good for collecting money from all over town.

1. Greed

Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Of course, I had to end with Greed. I mean, it’s literally his name after all. There are only three things Greed needs in life: money, women, and flipping off Father. He sees everything around him as his possession, including the people, and will take great offense if you even try to take away his massive wealth. You also have to love how the series explained his greediness – it’s very down-to-earth and realistic. He would go so far as to conquer the world just in the vain hope that it’ll fill the hole that’s in his heart. He wants everything because he feels like he doesn’t have anything. Now that deserves the title of Sin of Greed, not my boy Ban who just wants his lady back.
