His brush strokes carried with them whole worlds; his canvases became galaxies, onto themselves. And his collection of works displayed at Gallery 16 represent the universe in which Ray inhabited.
German-born in 1956, Rex Ray was, however, raised stateside in Colorado Springs. Then, at 25-years-young, Ray made his great exodus from The Centennial State to The Golden State, nestling himself within the Bay Area’s art scene. Studying at San Francisco Art Institute where he studied under Sam Tchakalian, Kathy Acker, and Angela Davis, receiving his BFA in 1989.
From there, he was off to the races.
Spanning a career that archs the better part of three-decades, Ray generated a rich body of work during his active years, including one particular piece of interest to us: the “Wall Of Sound.” A single collage of over 500 paper cut-outs, hung end-to-end in what is called library style, this one-of-a-kind creative endeavour is now you on display to the public—located at 501 3rd Street.
